Blog 10 - Mise-en-scene.

This blog will consist of the mise-en-scene which will be used in our music video. For example; settings/locations, props, costumes and make-up. I will be explaining how the mise-en-scene chosen will target the audience and how it reflects the genre of the music video. Not only this, but also how it contributes to the representation and how it communicates the story and the ideas.

The song chosen for the music video is Paramore - The only exception.

This is a section in my presentation which was used for the pitch. I had wrote this when creating the presentation;

We were thinking that for the characters involved in the music video, it would be good for them to casually dress as the stereotype of ‘emos’. We were thinking that it could be quite casual. Maybe a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt for the female, with fingerless gloves and eyeliner on and for the male, we were thinking that he could wear a black shirt and black trousers like the picture above of the male. He could maybe wear a wrist band and some checkered shoes. Same goes to the female about the shoes.

This would represent that the video is directed towards those who are more scene or as some like to stereotype it 'Emo'. This is because Paramore are more directed to this audience.

Most of the music video will be filmed in the recording studio, town and a house. The recording studio will be used the most, where there will be cuts from the storyline to the recording studio because it shows the main character singing. The town will be used for the past break up scenes and then the house is used to represent her only exception - the one she is with in the end. We were thinking of using a bedroom and a kitchen in the house. The bedroom showing the audience that they are together and they are both sleeping in the same room. Not only this, but it will also be a shot of the main character waking up whilst her 'Only exception' is asleep. Lastly; the kitchen would represent that they have their own independance - living together and not with anybody else. Although, that is ambiguious to the audience.

Blog 9 - Pitch.

For our music video, myself and my group had to create a presentation which held the information and ideas of what we would be doing for our music video. Involving the mise-en-scene, storylines, editing skills and song choice. We would have to get up infront of the class and present the ideas in order to sell our music video to the audience.

This is the link to our pitch:

Blog 8 - Initial ideas.

Myself and my group had plenty of ideas and as we have gone through the lessons we have developed our ideas and chosen a storyline in which we all decided on.

When first listening to the song 'Paramore - the only exception', I had plenty of ideas at that point in which I contributed to my group and we used them. These ideas consisted of editing skills and the main storyline.

The video will start with the main female (me) walking down the corridor and into the studio room. There will be a close up of the recording light as it turns on. This is when the intro of the song will begin. There is then a close up of a hand pushing the faders up. Then a close up of real to real and finally, a shot of the singer in the recording room, taking the mic.

The first two verses of 'The only exception' are 'When I was younger, I saw my daddy cry and curse at the wind. He broke his own heart and I watched as he tried to reassemble it. And my momma swore that she would never let herself forget. And that was the day that I promised I would never sing of love if it does not exist.' With these two verses, I thought that it would be interesting to use stop motion stop. In which I will draw the pictures (kid like drawings) of her and her parents and put this story into drawings. The kids drawings will show that it is set in the past and it was her past. Then the line will end with the main character (me) ripping the heart into two. Myself standing there, holding it. Whilst others are rushing past. This has zoomed out of the heart picture to form the present reality. The paper heart falls and the camera follows it as it does.

The chorus will be a time lapse of the singer standing in the middle of a busy street. Lip singing the lyrics.

The second verse will involved members of the band. At a specific part of the second verse, there will be a shot of a guitar player in which he strums the guitar in the recording studio. This soon moves on to the storyline of the song. The main female breaks up with her boyfriend. This shows that she has had 'love' in the past but none of them have worked like the one she has now.

The second chorus is a shot of the main female walking into her room and looking around. Dissapointed and sad. She begins to get angry as the music starts to get louder into the bridge.

The bridge approaches and she begins to throw stuff in the room. This showing that people have let her down in the past. It then uses a shot reverse shot to the band in the studio. Followed by the main female ripping pages from the photo album and throwing them away (of her past boyfriends) until she comes across a picture of her 'Only exception'. This picture she picks up of the floor and keeps. This shot crosses with the band in the studio. The ripped heart at the beginning soon slowly comes together. A shot of the main female holds the picture, the camera slowly zooming in at the picture. Whilst the camera cross cuts with the band and then finally returns to the photo. A zoom in and cross fade (overlapping) with the ripped heart that finally emerges. These shots will be cut with the pace being quite 'Snappy'. This is to add the effect of the song and making it seem as though she has her life back on to track and found that 'Only exception.'

The cast we have collected are:

# Main female - Myself
# Main male - Oliver Dechaine.
# Ex Boyfriends - Lloyd Robinson and Joshua Kybett.
# Musicians - [still pending...]

My group on the other hand are:

# Oliver Dechaine
# Caroline Lewis (me)
# Desire P
# Ben Hack

Blog 7 - Copying an existing video

In Dan’s lesson we spent a period of time producing and developing a music video; copying an existing video that has been made. Our video was of ‘Teenage dirt bag – Wheatus’. In this we set up the camera, the cast and the props/locations needed. In the previous blog – ‘Blog 7 – the making of the prop’ was a prop in which I made for this video remake. The class separated into two separate groups and each group went to a specific location to film that area of film. This allowed us to be able to bring back the film and build it together, so we could move onto the next step of work.
The song ‘Teenage Dirt bag’ by Wheatus was released in July 2000. It was included on the soundtrack of the movie ‘Loser’. It spent three weeks at #1 in Australia and becoming the second highest selling single of the year. It also reached #2 in the United Kingdom and Germany. Many artists have sung covers of this song. Artists like Girls Aloud, Dashboard confessional, the all girl Belgian Scala Choir and All Time Low. The song was also featured at number 69 on the top 100 greatest pop songs of all time on the UK music channel, ‘The Hits’. The record label that produced this single were ‘Columbia Records’. The length was 4.07. To back up this information, it can be found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_Dirtbag

Due to the length of this music video, we didn’t film it all but included the main sections of the music video. This was because copying this existing music video would help us to produce our very own. Getting the idea of what is expected and how to use the camera to the ability that you are able to. Not only this, but we used the macs. In which supplied us with many programmes for us to edit our pieces on up to the expected standard.

The locations my group used were:
# The classroom – we used a blank wall in order to hang up the scoreboard (the prop in which I made) to make the classroom seem like it was the gym. Considering that the gym is a main location in the ‘Teenage dirt bag’ video.
# The corridor – This was in order for us to show the corridor scene in which the main character walks through past the other students without them taking notice in him apart from when one guy budges straight into him and walks off. This representing that nobody really cares about him in the school.

The locations the other group used were:
# The stairs – This was for the scene in which the main character is asleep on the stairs. This making it clear to the audience that it is all a dream. The whole him finding a girl and dancing with her at the prom because it comes back to the stereotypes in which those from different stereotypes don’t end up together unless it was a challenged stereotype. Although, the film ‘Loser’ in which this single is on the soundtrack of this film, he does get the girl.
# The corridor – This group also used the corridor in order to remake the scene in which the main character walks through the corridor and others are showing the ‘Loser’ sign to him.
# The canteen – this was to represent another scene in which he’s an outcast from the other people. As though, he doesn’t belong there.

The link to see a preview of some of the clips in which we used can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ohjoUg3jGs - It holds many blank slots in which have not been slotted, but it gives a small preview of the different shots we took in order to be able to successfully produce a music video. Getting the idea of it.
