Blog 3 - Anaylsis of existing magazines.

Chosen Genre: Pop.
Titles within the genre: Top of the pops. Smash Hits.

Suggested Research areas for covers.

Magazine number one: Top of the Pops.

The top of the pops magazine was originated from the british music chart television programme, which was also Top of the pops. Each weekly programme consisted off performances from some of the weeks best selling popular music artists, with a rundown of that weeks single charts. The magazine still continues despite the end of the television series. I reckon the title sends out a message to the audience that this magazine includes the top pop music. Music thats currently in the charts and music which appeal to the target audience which they like. Consists of popular music artists. Top of the pops magazine was launched in February 1995. It still continues selling now. They were most famous for giving the Spice Girls there nicknames. A magazine cover can make a difference of 15% increase or decrease in average sales per month.

The magazine is also supported by the BBC - as it is shown top left of the front cover on this magazine. This having a connection with the programme 'Top of the pops'.

The font used on this front page include in colours like; Yellow, Pink and white. The font mostly being san serif. These colours are used not only to make it colourful but to make the main stories stand out. With a blue background and colourful colouring on the text and boxes, it stands out to the audience. Catches people's eyes. On this cover of 'Top of the pops' they use six different colours. Not only for it to stand out but to allow it to appeal to the target audience. Afterall this magazine is aimed towards young teens. To emphasis there different stories, they use the font to express to the audience. Allowing the stories to stand out by the colour of the writing and the boxes/circles they are placed in.

Mainly on there front covers, they use informal language. This is because it appeals to the audience they are targeting it to. Examples to this on this magazine are;

'14 Half dress hotties. Phwoar!'
'How to get a boyfriend - By the saturdays.'

This magazine is clearly directed to young teenage girls. Not only could this be shown with the main stories or the pictures but it is also displayed with the text that is on it.

On the front cover of this magazine, they have chosen the main image to be off JLS. This is because they are very popular with teenage girls. Not only being runners up on the popular television show, the X Factor, but also because of there sensational voice which has hit the charts, there good looks and also there charms. Many teenage girls are huge fans of them. Example of a headline that was in the paper recently - ' X Factor stars JLS draw thousands of fans as they switch on Manchester's Christmas lights. ' On the front cover, the boys are shown one behind the other in a diagonal line. Beginning with the most popular JLS, Aston Merrygold. Favourited by many teens and alot is talked about him, as well as the other group members. They've also recently released there new single 'Everybody in love' - which has already become first in the top 40 charts. That's the second song which has came first in the charts. With the caption beside it in bold pink and lip prints around the small border, it instantly attracts the attention of teenage girls. Although the picture would attract the attention, the headline of that story will want them to read more. - '43 snogs and one broken heart. Kiss and Tell. JLS confess!'

The clothing JLS are wearing on the front cover off this magazine are all neutral. This is a posed shot. Each wearing white or grey t-shirts which blend in with the colour of the background. Aston's shirt is branded with lip prints. This shows that it has a connection to the headline that goes with the image. Marvin, JB and Oritse who are behind Aston, are all smiling. Aston on the other hand has a shocked face. His mouth open. This image is connected to the heading. Afterall, confessions can be shocking. The reason why Aston has a different facial expression is because he stands out the most and again, he's in some areas the most popular member of JLS.

The other stories would also draw the teenage girls in. Including artists like Cheryl Cole and Alexandra Burke. Not only involving artists but celebrities also. Example: Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. Since the release of the Twilight saga, many teenage girls have become obsessed with it. Not just the film but the celebrities inside of it also. Evidence to this is; 'BRITISH actor ROBERT PATTINSON has been named the sexiest man in the world.' - The sun.

Moving on from the celebrity gossip, Top of the Pops also includes in stories that the audience/readers have sent through. Real life stories which involve situations that other teenagers encounter. The magazine then makes sure they have published advice or helplines to the readers if they have shared a similiar story. To make sure that they speak out or take in the advice that is being given on what to do if ever encountering that problem.

On the left hand side off the magazine, it includes;

* The bar code.
* The date - When released and when it runs out.
* The price.
* Issue number.

It also includes the medical reasons off the product. In the far left corner, with small writing it saids ' HMA, HP19 8DZ. Warning! Not suitable for children under 36 Months. Choking Hazard. As with all cosmetics, if an adverse reaction occurs, discontinue use. If symptoms persist, seek medical advice. If you have sensitive skin, patch test this item on a part of neck or on the back of hand. If irritation occurs, do not use the product. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediatley. Colours may stain fabrics. Take care when applying cosmetics to the eye area. See gift for ingredients. Keep away from small children. This is not a toy. Complies to cosmetic (safety) regulations 2005. Please retain this information for future reference.' - This part directed towards the free gift that came with it, which was a make up set.

This magazine also including interviews. The interviews on this front page would be 'What Alexandra really thinks of Leona!' 'Ive made every mistake in the book.' - Cheryl.

The magazine also shows a slogan below the title but on each magazine cover they have done, they have hidden half of the slogan by the main image. Maybe this is to get them to go onto there website to see what it is. The slogan which is 'More Gossip! More Scandal! More you!'. This issue consists of fifty five pages. Including advertisements inside. The magazine contains celebrity gossip, competitions, chart information, fashion and beauty advice, quizzes, and posters.

Demographics -
Age Range: 10 - 15 year olds. (teenagers)
Gender: Female.
Class: Middle class.
Nationality: British.
Psychographics - Celebrity. Audience lifestyle. Gossip. Fashion. Fun. (Competitions. Quizzes.) Latest music.

Both females and male stars are placed on the front cover. Depending whether there popular and if they are in the charts at that particular time. Some teenage girls look up to the female celebrities as idols/role models. On the other hand, its usually teenage girls who are attracted to male celebrities with there good looks and charms. As well as there occupation. Example; Artist. Actor. Etc.

The Top of the pops magazine is only famous in Britain because of the television show 'Top of the pops'. They have not yet started making the magazine international.

Main sells - Key stories in this issue are about;

Cheryl - 'Ive made every mistake in the book.'
Alexandra - 'What Alexandra really thinks of Leona.'
Real life - 'Stabbed... for saying my name.'

Although these are small on the cover, they do catch the eye of the reader and make them want to read on. Which gets more people to purchase it.

Top of the pops usually use the same layout monthly to help readers find information. Entertaining. Interesting. The personality of the magazine, what genre it would be selected in.

Magazine number two: Smash Hits.

Smash hits was a pop music based magazine, aimed at children and young teenagers. It was originally published in the United Kingdom by EMAP. EMAP is a British media company, specialising in the production of business to business magazines, and the organisation of business events and conferences. Smash hits Running from 1978 to 2006. It was issued fortnightly. I reckon the title was called Smash Hits because it includes information on the latest and top hits which 'Smash' the charts. Smash referring to 'top' or 'best'. This would appeal to the audience because they are interested in the latest news in pop. Including the charts, celebrity gossip, competitions etc.

The font used on the front cover of this Smash Hits magazine is mainly bold, modern and colourful. Apart from Smash Hits using San Serif writing, the font is completley different to the font which is used by Top of the Pops. Smash hits being bold and modern, whilst Top of the Pops use bubble type writing. The font used on Smash hits appeals to the audience because it suits the title. If 'Smash hits' had its title font as bubble writing, then it wouldn't really emphasise the story but with it being bold, it represents the word 'Smash' and that it is big hits.

The use of language is very informal. Using words such as Glam etc. This language is to be able to appeal to the target audience that it is targetting to. The younger generation. The colours used on this front cover are mostly yellow and white. Block colours which stand out with the background. There are five colours used on the front cover off this magazine. Yellow, White, Black, Pink and Blue. Although this magazine is not as colourful as Top of the Pops. It is targetted for older people than Top of the pops. The age is quite similiar but Smash hits is preferabbly more directed to older teenagers.

The writing on the front cover of Smash hits is quite easy to read. This is so the target audience they are targetting it too is able to read it. Afterall children and young teenagers aren't familiar with BIG terminology. They have used a range of fonts to make the stories stand out. Including italics to emphasis words to get the audience reading. Example; 'The weirdest habits you'll ever read.' - This is to emphasis the word ever, as meaning there trying to send a message across to the audience that this magazine holds many of the weirdest habits of Mcfly. People would want to read on. Especially if there a fan off Mcfly. It could also be that Smash hits holds more information on there habits than any other magazine. Also, there's a bit of boy band tension on the front page. 'Why Mcfly should be afraid. Very afraid...!' - Son of Dork. When this magazine was produced, Son of Dork were new. This is a latest band which appeals to the audience. Evidence to this is 'Its James Bourne's new band!' James Bourne was a member of busted, a popular boyband during 2001 to 2005. Reading and seeing this on the front cover instantly draws the attention of the audience, as busted used to be a very successful band. Many teenage girls were fans of them. Also, including Mcfly on the front page attracts the attention of teenage girls as they are very successful, even now.

On the front cover of Smash hits, they usually have pictures off Bands on the front as the main image that covers the most of the a4 spread. Maybe more than one person appeals more to the audience. Especially when the band is very popular or a band which is new to the music popularity. Like Son of Dork for instance. The bands used on the front page are mainly male bands, this is because they appeal to teenage girls. Who are appealed by the bands good looks, as well as there voices. The image for a pop magazine has to be fresh. It has to be colourful. The front picture of the musician/band, has to show them looking clean. Looking pretty and young. This is to appeal to the audience it is targetted to because they're young and good looking. What every teenager admires.

Target audience -
Age range: mid teenager - older teenagers.
Gender: Female.
Nationality: British.
Psychographics: Celebrity. Lifestyle. Beauty. Fashion. Gossip. Music. Best selling music. Fun (competitions).

The main image they have chosen is Son of Dork. It makes it clear on the cover, that this is a new boyband. 'It's James Bourne's new band!' - By the looks of it, James Bourne is the member who is slightly forward more than the other group members. This is in connection to the headline beside it. Son of Dork are dressed quite casually. This appeals to the audience that the magazine is showing Son of Dork's personalities. The way that they dress themself, instead of getting them to dress up as something there not. This is a posed shot, which fits in well with the background of Bricks. It makes them seem original. The facial expressions are showing the audience that there all about having fun and record music because they enjoy it.

Main Sells - Key stories in this issue are about:

* Mcfly 'The weirdest habits you'll ever read!'
* 'Green days secret life, EXPOSED!'
* Louis' X Factor gossip. 'Simon wears high heels and make up.'

Again, although these stories aren't quite as big as the main, they do have a big part in the magazine. These stories which appeal to the audience. Wanting them to read more.

On the right hand bottom side of the magazine, it includes;

* The barcode.
* The date. When its been released and when it runs out.
* The website URL.
* The price.

There is also a slogan on the page. Beside 'Louis' x factor gossip!', You are able to see a sentence which has begun to start but has been cut half way by the banner with Louis's story on. The slogan which is 'Squeezing stars, juicy bits.' - Again, this could make them get onto the actual website but then again, not all of Smash Hit magazines have covered the slogan. This slogan is representing the stories that they will include in the magazines. Telling the audience that there are big stars in the magazine and 'juicy' stories. For example; Gossip everybody wants to hear/read about.

The main stories on this front page would be;

* Mcfly - 'The weirdest habits you'll ever read!'
* Son of Dork - 'Why Mcfly should be afraid. Very afraid...!' 'Its James Bournes new band!'
* 'Green day's secret life EXPOSED!' - Which would also come under an interview.

Another interview which is on the front page off this magazine, would be Louis' X Factor Gossip - 'Simon wears high heels and make-up!' - This instantly would draw readers in. Afterall X Factor is a very popular television show. The magazine has also included competitions and fun on the front page. Example; 'Get Girlband Glam!' - Which is also an alliteration which attracts readers in. 'Win! Poll winners tickets.' and '10 Incredible Celeb Makeovers'. As well as showing main headlines of stories, they've included stuff that the audience/readers would be interested in doing. Not only including competitions and main headlines, they've put on the bottom who is going to be in the magazine. So if somebody doesn't like those that are pictured on the front, they have an option of four other celebrities which they could possibly like. Example; Simon Webbe. Rihanna. Orlando. Gerard MCR. This also shows that a variety of different music is included in the magazine.

Suggested research areas for contents.

Due to Top of the pops not including a contents page and unable to find a contents page for Smash Hits, i used another magazine called Mizz. Mizz Magazine is a magazine published in the United Kingdom, and is aimed at teenage and pre-teen girls. Mizz incorporates pages of fashion; displaying clothing trends, using models ranging from 12 to 16 years old.

The font used on this contents page is very colourful and bold. This is to appeal to the audience which it is targetted to. This being targetted to older teenage girls. Not only due to the colours of the page but also because of the images on it. These including pictures of popular celebrities including Zac Efron and what looks to be Jemma Mckenzie - Brown. These two stars have been in the hit musical 'High school musical.' So the audience it is targetted to will be immediatley drawn in. The other images consist of a teenage girl dressed up in fashion, a scarf and a cartoon image of a girl holding the magazine.

This is to represent the magazine showing fashion. Signifying that this is what the magazine consists of inside. Celebrity, fashion, real life etc.

This contents page is full of a vast amount of different colours. The colours representing there titles seperatley. Arranging them so that the different sections of the magazine are shown clearly to divide the magazine into different aspects. Example; real life is highlighted under the colour pink. Celebrity gossip is highlighted under the colour Blue and Fun and games is highlighted under the colour yellow. These continue with the other categories headed in different colours. This is presented well so that the reader is able to look through an arranged magazine. Also the boxes which involve colour in emphasise what is in them more to the audience. Example; the introduction, advertisement of goodies to be won and a helpline.

The language used on this contents page is quite formal. It being understandable and clear to the younger generation which it is targetted too.

The target audience for this contents page would be more targetted to mid-older teenagers. Around the age of about 13/14 - 17/18 years old. The gender which it is directed to would be targetted to females. Not only because of the colour but also because of the layout and language which has been used. There are mainly female articles inside this magazine, not many for males.

The styles of this contents page is neatly layed out and attracts the attention of the audience because its not cramped together but instead is neatly set out.

The images shown will stand out to the audience because they are popular faces. Involving Zac Efron and Jemma Mckenzie - Brown. These two stars have been in the hit musical 'High school musical' as i mentioned above. This musical is very popular amongst teenage girls. The other images represent fashion, feminine and beauty. These images signify what the magazine consists off. Celebrity, fashion, real life etc.

The psychographics used on the contents page include in:

* Celeb.
* Real life.
* Style.
* Fun.
* You.
* Plus.

Demographics:

Age Range - 13/14 - 17 years old. (teenagers)
Gender: Female.
Class: Middle Class.
Nationality: British.

'This magazine encourages readers to write in about events in their life. Also containing information about celebrities in a 'Gossip' form. Also includes information on how to deal with teenage issues relating to puberty, hygeine, friends and relationships. It has a range of competitions and quizzes and posters. It comes out once a fortnight.' - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/mizz_magazine

Suggested research areas for double page spread.

The double page spread i have chosen to analyse is page 20-21 in the top of the pops magazine. (14th october - 10 November 2009.) The main headline for the story is firstly shown on the front page. The headline being; '43 snogs and one broken heart. Kiss and Tell. JLS Confess.'

This instantly attracts the attention of teenage girls. Afterall their is a big group thats not long been in the music industry. There young, good looking, have amazing singing voices and are able to charm females.

The layout of this page is set out clear and understandable. The questions which were asked have been placed into categories. The colours also make the layout look different. Centered in the centre of the pages is JLS member, Marvin Humes. Not only would this attract the attention of females but its also advertising the competition in the far right corner 'Win! Astons shirt and Marvins T-Shirt.' The body language and facial expressions are set out next to the category they are set in. For instance; Oritse - Cheeky grin. His eyes looking straight at the camera (makes it more affective to have them staring towards the readers.) His left arm up with his finger pointing to a phone which he is holding in his right hand. This image being in the box 'Naughty texts and romantic memories.' This having connection to the image as he is pointing towards a mobile phone and one of the main advantages of mobiles is texting. The caption is also in connection to the image. Making it stand out, it has been placed into a black circle. The writing being white and pink. This saying; 'I never ask for a girls number unless i know im gonna call - Oritse.'

On the right page (page 21) similiar to the image being in connection, this time it is JB. His body language and facial expressions completley different to Oritse's. In the image, he has posed holding an envelope with 'JB x' written on it. Holding this envelope with his left hand, he has his right hand pulling a bra out of the envelope. His facial expression looking shocked. This image instantly alerts the audience and makes them want to read on. The category which this is signifying is 'Heartbreak, boobs and loads of snogging.' His caption which is in the same layout as Oritse (black circle and white and pink writing.) is different to Oritse's. Although this still connects with his image 'Ive been asked to sign boobs! - JB' The image and caption linking because of the bra and what he stated. The caption linking with the image because it must be shocking for a female to approach you and ask you to sign somewhere thats not very appropriate.

The colours which have been used are very feminine. It is clear that this is targetted to females. Especially as there being interviewed about what girls talk about the most. Example; Snogging, obsessions and boys etc. This also includes in gossip about the members of JLS. Something many females would like to know about.

The fonts used on this double page spread are clear and easy to read. The fonts are mainly bold and what looks to be Arial. The headlines on this page are a bigger font size to the rest of the writing. This is to make it stand out more and be able to categorise the different aspects of the interview.

Also the headlines each have a '&' in which is a different font to the rest of the headline. This is to emphasise that there is more to the story. For example; wild nights & girls phone numbers.' The language used on this double page spread is informal, the words being like 'Boobs', 'Snogging' etc. There are about six colours on this double page spread. Colours like purple, light pink, dark pink, black, white and red. These colours being very feminine. Which also attracts the attention of teenage girls.

This double page spread is an interview of the members of JLS. It is revealing there background of there social life. Mainly there background in relationships and romances they've been in.

Demographics:

Age Range - 10-16 year olds. (teenagers)
Gender - Female.
Class - Middle Class.
Nationality - British.

Anything else?
As well as all the information JLS are confessing and as well as the images, there is also a competition on the right hand side. 'Win! Astons shirt and Marvins T-Shirt!' This attracts the attention of readers more because they have a chance of winning something which the two members of JLS have worn. Any girl would love to get there hands on.

They have made sure that they have included:

* The question.
* Contact details: Email or Post.
* Closing Date.
* Full terms and conditions. Page 50.

Below the competition is a seperate box (this is shown because its been seperated by colour) which holds JLS's website, advertisting there single, advertising radio and advertising a website to watch Aston get 'Gunky'. An image has also been shown bottom right to give a taste to the audience of what he looked like after. Which gets more females to go on the website to check it out.

Finally, bottom right has the ownership of the words written and the photos which have been taken. It is also clear on the bottom of each page the page numbers.

Blog 2 - Target Audience. (Music Magazine)

Research from www.NRS.co.uk. Top of the pops magazine.

This helped me out by noticing who would be purchasing the magazine. Which class. Example; Middle classed, higher classed and lowered class. This is ideal for me, because it would depend on the price of the magazine. Which class i would be targetting the magazine too.

My target audience.

The age range ive targetted my magazine too would be to children and young teenagers. This is because it holds music that they like and the font and colour used on it, also express to the age range i have targetted it too. The use of font can make a lot of different to a front page. Whether its going to appeal to the audience which you are targetting it too. Example; For the younger generation, it should be colourful and show excitement. Otherwise there not going to be interested.

The class that i have targetted my magazine to would be middle classed. The price being £2.10.

The magazine is British. It will be sold in Britain.

The language is informal, which appeals to the audience i am targetting to. It holds easy san serif writing, so youngsters are able to read it. It also includes bubble writing which attracts to youngsters, who like that sort of writing.

Blog 1 - Introduction. (Music Magazine)

In this project we will be creating a music magazine. We firstly began creating a College magazine to get us comfortable with the software that we needed. It also showed us what would be needed for the music magazine. We will compare two popular music magazines firstly to know what is needed on the magazines. Taking note off the target audience, gender, age etc for the magazine we are later going to create. Research will also be included on other magazines which are big sellers.

As well as this, we will firstly be drawing our front cover, contents page and double spread. (which we will later be designing on Adobe Indesign.) This being the flat plan which will help us for when we design the real thing on Adobe Indesign. Testing fonts, we will know which to use on our final magazine. This Would help us out as we would be seeing which fonts appeal to the target audience and able to compare our fonts from the magazines we analysed in our earlier blog. We shall be learning photo editing. Including; Changes to light or colour. What has been changed and why etc. We shall also be looking whether the text will be formal or informal. Learning about different aspects which are needed on the magazine to appeal to the audience.

Evaluation - College magazine.

In this project, i designed my college magazine. Firstly beginning off the name. I originally had three names.

- Lewes College.

- Sussex Downs.

- SixthForm

I chose the best name which would stand out to the audience and which sounded quite professional. Well more professional than the other titles i had.

I reckon on the front page, i included lots of information for the audience. This would appeal to the audience because they know that they are purchasing a magazine with a great amount inside.

To improve;

- The contents page could have held alot more on it. To appeal to the audience to what they are looking for. As there isn't that much excitement in the page.
- The front cover could have had more colours and images on.
I am pleased with the layout of the front cover of the magazine. I reckon i have located the writing in the best places. So that there were no blank spaces anywhere and it was located in a presentable way.

Opinions from the target audience.

- Very informative.
- Well layed out.
- Lacking images.
- More information on the college lifestyle.
