Blog 7 - The making of the prop.

In this particular area of Media Studies we were copying an existing music video in Dan Jubbs lesson. The music video in which was chosen was 'Teenage dirtbag' in which was a single by the band Wheatus. This song was released in July 2000. In our class, in order to get an idea of how to create a music video and to get aware and confident with the equipment needed, we had to re-create this music video. Making sure we got the right camera shots and including the props needed in the music video. I'm a creative person, so to make the music video more alike to the original, I took my own time to design a scoreboard. The scoreboard in which pops up in the background of the Teenage dirtbag video often. It took me a few days; about three I believe. It took a while but I thought the outcome was good and I had really enjoyed creating the scoreboard. This blog consists of pictures of the construction of this certain prop and me making it. I looked at the scoreboard on the Teenage Dirtbag video and made it slightly similiar to that. The numbers on the scoreboard are the same as the numbers on the scoreboard in the original video. This also shows that it is copying this video in the way it is.
I began the project firstly with a small amount of paints at first but they were nowhere near able to cover the whole of the scoreboard and to be honest, they were useless and didn't allow the scoreboard to properly stand out. So I took a trip down to B&Q and purchased a tub of strong black paint, different sized paintbrushes and a tub of strong glue in order to place the cardboard onto each other. The cardboard was a few boxes in which were no longer needed, so they were an oppurtunity to use for this project and lastly; the white type square material boxes were packaging to keep a product we had purchased safe, so these also came in very handy for the project because we no longer needed them. With all these props, and paper, I managed to get through the project and complete it.

Once I had the right paint and had purchased the equipment which was needed, I began. Firstly, I planned out the shape the scoreboard would be. I place the cardboard onto my outdoor drive and place the white rectangle shapes on top of the cardboard. Setting them into the right places as if though it was set as a scoreboard. Then using a standard kitchen knife, I began cutting the cardboard into the shape of a scoreboard. Whilst I was doing this project, I placed my camera on timer to record this project by pictures. I did this often in order to capture everything I had done in order to create the scoreboard. I did have to add more cardboard onto the other piece to make it bigger. I did this by using the strong glue in which I purchased that very day from B&Q – Although, I glued it together once I had painted it all. Once this had been completed and the shape had been formed, I began painting. Using the paint in which I had purchased, I started to paint the cardboard to form the background of the scoreboard and make it look more realistic. The painting took a while as I needed to do at least two to three coats, so that it stood out. This was at the point of where I needed to glue cardboard onto the other piece of cardboard to get the right shape. Once I had glued it onto each other, I then painted the next piece of cardboard and filled the spots in which I had missed out.

Moving on, I took the white rectangle polyester type material blocks and glued paper into the holes. This would be the space in which I would be writing the numbers. I put quite a few layers of paper into each one in order to make it stronger. I did this to all four rectangular shapes and even had to cut it into the right shape. Getting rid of the pieces that were inside. Once I had completed this area of the project, I took the rectangular shapes and individually I painted them grey to add a better affect and make the scoreboard more realistic. I did this to all four rectangular shapes. The pieces of paper in the centre of each rectangular shapes, I painted them black. This was because then it would blend into the background and again make it seem more realistic. With this, I would later be able to write the numbers in and make the numbers stand out more. Unfortunately, at first the blocks would not stick onto the cardboard board. So in order to make them stick, I placed a few layers of paper underneath and stuck the blocks onto the paper, in which stuck on the board.

The next step was getting the writing onto the board. I used red coloured paper for this. In order for it to stand out as well as making it look like a scoreboard. I found that with the coloured paper, it was better than using just red paint because it looked brighter. The red pieces of paper in which I cut out formed the letters of ‘Home’ and ‘Guest’. This was because it is the words in which are written on a scoreboard. I then stuck these letters onto the scoreboard in the particular places in which they would appear on a scoreboard.

I needed another piece of cardboard, so I managed to find a smaller box and cut out a small piece. This would be the head board of the board and on this board I would be writing Teenage Dirtbag in order to represent what the scoreboard is for. I glued this piece onto the cardboard at first but unfortunately it continued to keep falling off. So instead I used celotape to hold it together. This worked. Once this had been celotaped, I then painted this certain piece of cardboard.

All that needed to be done now is the numbers written onto the scoreboard to add the finishing effect. I first practiced this on a blank piece of paper. Painting black on and seeing which colour went well with the black and made it stand out. The yellow is which caught my attention and it would also represent the lights in which are used for the numbers in a real scoreboard. The numbers in which I wrote in this boxes were the numbers in which were shown on the scoreboard in the Teenage Dirtbag music video. I put a few layers of yellow paint onto the scoreboard in order to make it stand out more. This was then complete and it made our copy of the music video really effective.
